North East, which is located at the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay, is a short drive from both Philadelphia and Baltimore and is less than an hour away. It is a short trip south from the county seat, Elkton.
The Town of North East was established by the English in 1658 and constituted as a municipality in 1850. The southern half of town is built on the site of a former Shawnee Indian settlement. Cecil County’s first permanent settlement was located in the North East. With burials of Susquehannock Indians dating back to the 1600s, the cemetery at Saint Mary Anne’s Episcopal Church, located on Main Street, is one of the oldest in the state of Maryland.
Along the length of Main Street, tourists will find numerous stores that sell handmade and vintage items, in addition to multiple eateries. This museum, which can be found near the end of Walnut Street in the North East Community Park, has one of the largest collections of hunting and fishing artifacts in the area, and it is open to the public.
The Elk Neck State Park, Turkey Point Lighthouse, and Elk Neck State Forest, all of which are located a short distance outside of town, provide visitors with opportunities for hiking and other recreational activities.
As the official seal of the town of North East, we have chosen the following to be it:
This is the official seal for the town. It’s a diamond shape with a white border on the top half of the diamond, red letters with black shadowing on the left side and “North East” on the right.
There is also a yellow border inside the white border, then another white border. All borders are marked with black lines. A white and multi gray tone lighthouse with a window, eight (8) ducks in flight to the left of the lighthouse, a rockfish on a turquoise background on the left, and two (2) mallard ducks in flight on the right. “Incorporated 1850” is written in white letters with a red ribbon next to it. The Clerk-Treasurer of the Town of North East will have the official seal of the Town of North East. The seal will be kept in the Town Hall at all times.
